Biography/History:
Astronomer (extragalactic astronomy and cosmology). Researcher, Yerkes Observatory, 1914-1917; on the staff of Mt. Wilson and Palomar Observatories from 1919; and chief ballistician and director, Supersonic Wind Tunnels Laboratory, Ballistic Research Laboratory, U.S. War Department, 1942-1946.
Scope of Material:
Correspondence and manuscripts. Primarily professional correspondence, also selected manuscripts and addresses, and condolence letters to his wife after his death. Topics include galactic and extragalactic structure, astronomical observation and techniques, and participation of scientists in World War II.
