Biography/History:
Philip McCord Morse, 1903-1985, B.S. in physics, 1926, Case
Institute
; Ph.D. in physics, 1929, Princeton University, was assistant professor of physics at the
Massachusetts
Institute
of
Technology
, 1931-1934; associate professor, 1934-1939; and professor, 1939-1969. He received the U.S. Medal for Merit for his work during World War II, which included organizing and directing the Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Research Group, whose report "
Methods
of Operations Research" was widely used after 1950. Operations research was a new discipline which Morse described as the application of the scientific method to the study and improvement of the operations of men plus machines. In 1945 he helped to establish the Acoustics Laboratory at MIT but left in 1946 to become director of the newly formed Brookhaven National Laboratory. In 1948 he went to Washington, D.C., to organize the Weapons Systems Evaluation Group, which he directed until 1950. He returned to MIT in 1950 and was instrumental in promoting operations research for non-military uses. In 1956 the Operations Research Center became an official interdepartmental facility of which Morse was director until 1969. He also initiated the
Computation
Center which he directed, 1955-1967. Morse served on the Board of Trustees of the
Institute
for Defense Analyses, 1956-1961, and the Rand Corporation, 1948-1962.
Scope of Material:
Collection includes biographical information, writings, subject files, and information documenting Morse's association with MIT. The MIT materials chart the progress of
computation
at the
Institute
through minutes, notes, and reports from various committees, and a position paper on the
Computation
Center. General adminstrative materials document the Operations Research Center and the establishment of a time-sharing arrangement at the
Computation
Center. The subject files form the largest part of the collection and are primarily concerned with Morse's promotion of operations research outside MIT through consulting projects for the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development and NATO. His activities with organizations include the Acoustical Society of America, American
Institute
of Physics, American Physical Society, National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, Operations Research Society of America, International Federation of Operations Research Societies, Emergency
Committee
of Atomic Scientists, Union of Concerned Scientists, the Federation of American Scientists. Morse's writings are documented through notes, calculations, graphs, and tables as well as correspondence, manuscript drafts, and reprints; course information and notes are also included. Biographical materials include notes for Morse's autobiography; other biographical information; bibliographies; and awards, honors, and congratulatory letters. Some names prominently mentioned in the collection include: Russell Lincoln Ackoff, William P. Allis, Leo Beranek, Hans Bethe, Richard H. Bolt, Vannevar Bush, Edward Uhler Condon, Karl K. Darrow, W. B. Kehl, Arnold Lowan, John McLucas, Don Menzel, Dayton Clarence Miller, A. L. Oliver, Jane Oppenheimer, Anne Roe, Charles Salzmann, E. C. G. Stueckelberg, Manuel Vallarta, John E. Walsh.
