Biography/History:
Albert Gordon Hill (1910-1996), B.S. 1930, M.S. 1934, Washington University, Ph.D. in physics, 1937, University of Rochester, became instructor in the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1937, associate professor in 1946, professor in 1947, and professor emeritus in 1975. He also held various administrative positions at MIT including associate director (1946-1949) and later director (1949-1952) of the Research Laboratory of Electronics; assistant director (1951-1952) and later Director (1952-1955) of Lincoln Laboratory; vice president for research, MIT (1970-1975); chairman, Board of Directors, Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc. (1973- ) and director of the MIT Plasma Fusion Center (1976-1978).
Scope of Material:
The collection documents Hill's teaching, research, and administrative career at the MIT and his outside professional activities. Correspondence, memoranda, and reports document his involvement in the Energy Laboratory, the Research Laboratory of Electronics, the Instrumentation Laboratory (later the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory), Lincoln Laboratory, the Laboratory for Nuclear Science, the Radiation Laboratory, and the Plasma Fusion Center. There are affirmative action plans from MIT's laboratories and centers which he received as vice president for research. The collection also documents Hill's involvement with government security and military organizations such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Institute for Defense Analyses, the National Security Agency, and the United States Air Force. Also included is correspondence with professional organizations including the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Institute of Physics, and the American Physical Society. Finally, correspondence and reports document Hill's involvement with outside corporations including Bowmar Instrumentation Corporation,
