Biography/History:
The Mid-Ocean Dynamics Experiment (MODE) explored the role of mesoscale eddy motions in the dynamics of general oceanic circulation. MODE was preceded by a sixteen-month theoretical and observational field study called MODE-0 and PREMODE. The MODE-1 program, carried out between March and July of 1973, was a collection of twelve experimental and theoretical scientific projects performed simultaneously, using different instruments to measure the same phenomena from dissimilar views. Collective responsibility and authority for the project resided in the twenty-one-member MODE Scientific Council, formed in mid-1971. Henry Stommel, professor of meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was one of the primary organizers of the project.
Scope of Material:
Correspondence, notes, meeting minutes, proposals, strategy statements, and reports from the working files of Nick P. Fofonoff of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, executive officer Dennis Moore of Nova University, Curt Collins of the National Science Foundation, and Carl Wunsch of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology document the development, organization, progress, and results of MODE. There are working charts which indicate the sites of MODE instrumentation; ship routes, ship logs, newsletters, and bulletins which detail daily progress; and motion films about the project including Recovery of a MODE Mooring, and Storms in the Deep Sea.
Access Restrictions:
In accordance with MIT policy, there are restrictions on access to portions of this collection. Researchers may request permission to use restricted materials. Consult the Institute Archivist for further information. Retrieval requires advance notice.
